Chapter 10

Fabrics are now being used in eccentric ways. Industrial fabrics are now being turned into wearable garments and the conventional materials are made into new patterns.

For instance, traditional African attires have evolved and their colourful, print fabrics have been crafted into modern silhouettes to appeal to the millennium consumer, which is also evident in the now unconventional denim trend.

Designers have taken a step in transforming what has been a heavy duty fabric into soft designs. Denim has proved to be versatile on runways and walkways of Europe and America. Vetements led the trend earlier this year at the Couture Fashion Week by showing the world that denim is not only for street wear, but is couture too, a wearable art and a form of expression. Just like African fabrics.
