Chapter 13

My definition of style is putting a signature on things that we wear and the way we express ourselves. Continuing on chapter 12's subject of wearable art, we have Ditiro Mashigo who applies her style to what she creates. She is a textile and fashion designer based in Pretoria West. She established her brand Serati Ltd in 2014, who's main focus is making sustainable textile art.

Bold colours, asymmetric designs and 2D/3D motifs are her signature in her afro-futuristc line, made from upcycled textiles, hand painting and embroidery as seen in the pictures below. Her collection is called, "Maadingwa", meaning borrowed in Sepedi, is inspired by how the Bapedi people use language as a tool across cultural and racial groups in South Africa. In short cohesion. As she put it, "We need to learn to get along".

By combining different textile techniques, traditional methods and contemporary fabrics she produces one of a kind pieces that tells her story through a relatable medium. Tell your story. Create what sets your heart on fire and it will shed light on your path.
