Below is an invitation I made for KMSA (Kasi Muslims of South Africa). They are hosting an aqeeqah, which is an Islamic tradition of the sacrifice of an animal on the occasion of a child's birth, as well as a memorial for the child's mother who passed unexpectedly.
Here I wanted to capture the innocence of the child, as well as the emotion that a baby evokes by not being too literal. I also saw this as an opportunity to blend two religious belief systems into one concept, syncretism.
I've incorporated the Islamic calligraphy of bismillah, a blessing in the name of God (an invocation used by Muslims at the beginning of an undertaking), which I placed onto a dreamcatcher (a small hoop containing a horsehair mesh decorated with feathers and beads, believed by American Indians to give its owner good dreams).
